  1. About the only thing I dislike about machine pins is that they’re easy to bend (which was a bit of a problem back in the days when CPUs used these). Board stacking can work with male and female pins, and you can turn a board into a socketed IC of sorts using KiCAD or Eagle, so if the board dies, you just pop in another one. These are designed to hold even through vibrations, so if you have a continuity problem, chances are it’s not these pins.

Chip Quik sold machine pins when I was shopping last year, so that’s a decent starting point. I think you can only find one gender for PTH on Digikey, so you have to go to Arrow for the other gender. It’s a bit of a pain.

  2. With newer components I have no issue with them. However I do some work with older devices including retro computers like the Amiga, and the chip legs are rectangular in regard to insertion. with this kind of socket on a rectangular pin you would get a bare minimum connection only on the corners of the pin (you know the toy – insert cube into round hole)

  3. I have been trying to find out what they were called for a while now, finally i will take out a lone and buy enough for a lifetime.

  4. Yeaaah but the dip socket variety of these are really difficult to get packages in and out of, especially large packages. They honestly suck, too much holding force so you almost always bend the pins getting it out, and the holes have too tight of a tolerance to easily get the package back in.

  5. I bought these before. But they’re so shallow that they don’t hold the components well. A slight bump on the resistor and then I have to plug it back in because a lead fell out.

  6. I’ve had to go back and install dual-wipe sockets in dozens of Hi-Def NES installs because these do not make good IC sockets for DIP chips. Even the gold-plated ones suck. Obviously, it’s better for chips that weren’t just desoldered, but my rule of thumb is: Round pin sockets are for round pin headers… not folded leadframe chips, not component legs, and definitely not breadboard jumpers. Note: Hi-Def NES involves removing two DIP40 chips (CPU and PPU) and installing into interposers which are themselves installed back onto the board. The kit includes round pin sockets for the interposers and the mainboard because dual-wipe sockets are too tall. I eliminate one set by soldering directly (no socket), making room to replace another in each stack with dual-wipe.

I’ve had to do the same with NES RGB installs which only replace the PPU but there are additional board to board interposer connections. The round pins are fine for b2b connections but the PPU itself needs dual-wipe or direct solder. You can’t put desoldered pins in a round pin socket and expect a long term reliable connection.

  7. i gave it one like So…

    when i finally

    get swiss cheese
    Ritz crackers and

    see about swiss machine
    pins

    and proper Swiss jumper-wires

  8. You are trimming your headers wrong, that’s why. You need a micro hobby saw, you cut through it in four strokes.

  9. I don’t understand how they maintain contact in the hole. Is there an internal spring? a friction press fit would require strict spec on the leads.

  10. From what I’ve seen, and heard, on a couple of vids is that these don’t always make good contact with IC pins.

  11. Ok, so I’m not the only one who feels weird doing that crude chopping thing with normal header sockets
