Adam Savage's Favorite Tools: Cordless Heat Gun!

Adam discusses the many ways to use a heat gun in projects, including the most common of heat guns: the ubiquitous hair dryer. And recently, he picked up a small cordless heat gun that is an ideal balance between the versatility of a blow dryer and the power of a corded heat gun. Perfect for electronics projects!

  1. You forgot to mention that the current best cordless heat gun is the 18V variable temp gun from Makita. Getting locked into a system by battery interface is a bummer. We need a modular standard lithium battery for cordless!

  2. I’ve been researching this heat gun for days, but it wasn’t until your logical explanation that sold me on going with this platform. I appreciate your view and explanation, thank you!!

  3. I know foam cutters use nichrome wire, I would guess that’s not a bad choice for a heat gun, too, due to the resistance they provide.

  4. Damnit…I’ve been eyeing up that heat gun for awhile but keep talking myself out of it, convincing myself that my old hair dryer is good enough…

    Thanks, Adam!

  5. the part at the end made the world a better place by 1%. and thats a good thing not bad. i love it. best badges ever ill get them all for my lil brother who is working on his project car xD

  6. Believe it or not. Inmates turn property boxes into ovens to cook with in their cells. They keep chip bags and line the box with the reflective side of the bag. Then fit a reading lamp bulb into the box. Its incredible how good they work. I once watched a guy mash up oyster crackers in water and make pizza crust then proceed to top it with all the toppoings youd expect that he lifted from his job in the kitchen during the day. Sure enough in about an hour he cooked a legit pizza. That hot box is very effective

  7. what counts as "gluing your fingers together"? because it’s never been so bad for me that I can’t easily pull them apart.

  8. Where’s the demerit badge for dropping an impact driver on your head and cracking it open? Asking for a friend.

  9. 7:00 "… its warm but it will never burn me out here…" as he slowly, subconsciously, keeps moving his hand further away. On a side note, makita makes a 2 speed, temperature controlled version, but it costs $200.

  10. corded is good as well coz its unlimited power ,but why afraid of overburnt ? it has regulator rite ? i own both corded & cordless ,i do decal works so both are great to me .only cordless one just for convenience and tight area .battery last 15min 2nd gear non stop ,pretty impressive .

  11. Ok, I watched myth busters all the time. Why am I now just finding out about this channel ? Adam has so much building and creating knowledge !

  12. I wish someone would add a butane tank to one of these! High volume of heat but not burn instantly! But cordless so I don’t have to lug a generator around!

  13. You might get more flexibility out of a soldering station with hot air side, those have adjustable heat and air outputs πŸ‘

  14. Best to use an SMD Hot Air Workstation sir Adam. πŸ™‚

The ones from Weller usually is truly pro (there’s another higher brand, I forgot, it’s not Hakko or the cheap Quick).

    God bless.

  15. I remember the days when my dad would tell me battery powered tools were worthless. Nowadays, that’s all he uses! The tech has advanced so much! It’s great πŸ€™πŸ½

  16. hi can you please tell me if the temperature of any cordless heat gun will will be ok to take paint off wooden windows or anything painted

  17. Thank you, i was undecided, and this video really helped. I got one, and it’s perfect for the shop, and it’s perfect for thawing frozen Horse Hay netting on feeders.

  18. The newest Makita cordless that just came out puts out more heat than that Dewalt and the old Makita, if you’re not careful you can still burn stuff ( battery capacity also makes a big difference ), but its still no replacement for the corded one, or until they come out with the 40V.

  19. I just bought the DeWalt heat gun this afternoon.
I already have the B&D Matrix and was positive the batteries would work. They are made by the same company.
    Nope.
The bastards changed the socket slightly.
I GUARANTEE it’s the same battery on the inside.
So I had to go back and buy the battery and charger kit.
Which costs 4X what it should.
Oh well. At least now I have a nice tool.

  20. Our battery powered heat gun hangs over the bench and is the go-to in the shop as it’s enough heat for almost all jobs without damaging things. The mains powered one has been relegated to a box at the back of the shop for stripping paint.

  21. Hi Adam, is it possible to convert the 220V hair dryer to work on a 12V DC or 20V DC battery? Thanks

  22. I do holiday lights around my house using ws2811 pixels. With around 22,000 pixels in over 110 props I get a few pixels out every few weeks. Love my portable heat gun except when it’s very cold outside. That is when the portable heat gun won’t melt the solder seal pieces in December in Ohio. πŸ™‚ Then we either bring the prop indoors or we have extention cords.

  23. Adam, πŸ˜‚ I’ve earned all those badges without even knowing they were a thing! 😊 Thank you for keeping my brain from idling in neutral too much! πŸ‘πŸ˜Š
